Kinney County Moves to Block NGO Traffic
County Commissioners Use COVID-19 Disaster Declaration to Enable Measure
Kinney County leaders earlier this week decided unanimously to endorse a plan that will soon see local deputies stopping vehicles they have probable cause to suspect are transporting illegal aliens, and check them for Covid-19 testing paperwork.
If they don’t have any from the last 72 hours, the vehicles will be turned back to their point of origin, and forced to take another route to their destination.
Kinney County squats right on top of Highway 90, the main artery between Del Rio and San Antonio, Texas. Right now, Del Rio is the second busiest location in the state for illegal alien traffic.
The measure exempts aliens being transported by law-enforcement and is expected to majorly inconvenience charter bus lines, and passenger vans operated by non-governmental organizations.
"We're just concerned about the spread of Covid. We have 44 cases today, and 22 more probable cases," said County Judge Tully Shahan, adding that those are very high numbers for what experts call an "outdoor" community like Brackettville and Kinney County. It’s also worth noting that the local school district has closed its doors temporarily, because so many students have tested positive.
The move is certain to cause major friction with some state and federal organizations, as well as pro-illegal immigration activists. The County Judge tells us he fully expects there to be lawsuits, and that the County is ready for them. It’s also possible that the enforcement of this regulation will cause great trouble for Val Verde County, and the city of Del Rio, next door— causing unvaccinated aliens to pile up there until arrangements can be made to ship them by some other route. To the north, they can eventually reach I-10. By going Southeast, they pass through Eagle Pass and other communities before eventually reaching I-35. Both routes add many miles to the trip.
There are also indications that other rural area counties may also be following in these footsteps soon, creating a sort of ad-hoc compact of Counties that are moving independently of State legislators.
In a way the move could be seen as a bit of a gambit, in an ongoing game of brinkmanship being played here along the border, one that may force state and federal authorities to confront very real questions about Covid-19, Illegal Immigration, and why U.S. citizens are being put under incredible pressure to volunteer for vaccination, while illegal aliens and asylum seekers are being shipped all over the country without so much as a test.
Some cynics say the NGO’s will simply petition for more funding from the Government to pay for testing, and go on about their business.
Since this piece was published, plans were quietly shelved in the face of some opposition from Val Verde County. See more recently published newsletters for that. Kinney County Officials say the plans may return in the future.
