A lot of folks are stirred up in Kinney County this week— excited to learn Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is coming with Fox News Anchor Maria Bartiromo, to participate in a townhall meeting and hear firsthand the concerns of area taxpayers and residents.
At times, Paxton has seemed to take a harder line than publicly espoused by Governor Greg Abbot, and has been getting plenty of national ink and criticism in and out of the state all his own, following the state’s ban on most abortions. That ban has been temporarily suspended by a federal judge, by the way, though it’s not clear if abortions will resume while the suspension is sorted out.
Bartiromo first came to prominence in the middle ‘90s on CNBC, when cultural wags tagged her with the perhaps sexist moniker the “money honey.” She was a pioneer as a woman and a journalist, reporting financial news on Wall Street— the first male or female to report live from “the floor.”
In 2016, she seemed one of the least biased journalists regularly covering the Donald Trump campaign while working for FOX News. Some would seem to argue the lack of bias demonstrated bias in his favor. Wikipedia even says she “amplified” his “conspiracy theories,” which may say more about wikipedian bias than anything else.
Nonetheless, if she wasn’t regarded as a relatively friendly journalist on the subject of border security, Ken Paxton would probably be meeting someone else in Kinney County.
Earlier this week, she was knighted by the Republic of Italy, at the Italian Embassy in New York.
Here’s a look at the flyer for the townhall:
This is a very positive development for residents in Kinney County. But, one wants to caution folks to temper their expectations. Ultimately, the Attorney General serves at the pleasure of the Governor. And while many in Kinney County would like to see stiff measures taken that could seriously impact international trade and Non Governmental Organizations, one has to presume that money will always talk.
And right now, politically speaking, the money is against such stiff measures. One hesitates to even try and verbalize what might have to happen for that equation to change. If the equation does change— events like this will play a role.
Questions for the Attorney General will be presented by Ms. Bartiromo, so the event can proceed in a quick and orderly fashion. They should be submitted to this email address: Kellycs03@aol.com
It belongs to one of the event organizers.
Rereading this: What the heck was I saying, 'Serves at the pleasure of the Governor?' It's an elected position, obviously. He serves at the pleasure of the voters. I reckon we were trying to say something about how there's actually not a lot he can do about physically securing things-- outside the courtroom, the AG's power can be limited, though it remains of course, far-reaching within his wheelhouse.
This is great news!
I'm very happy they're coming here!
I think they'll do a great job.
