The Mayor of Del Rio, Bruno Lozano, popped up on Facebook in the last 24 hours, recording a statement to video down in front of the International Port of Entry, where thousands and thousands of mostly Haitian Illegal Aliens are waiting to surrender themselves.
The last reliable count that we’ve heard was something like 8000 people under there, and according to the Mayor, there are reports that numbers could skyrocket in the next short while as high as 20-thousand.
Folks, there’s only about 35,000 people that call Del Rio home. Maybe 40-something thousand in the entire county. There’s no way on God’s green earth for this to proceed in a fashion that we could ordinarily call “well.”
Already there are indications that some of the people camped out under the bridge are defecating and urinating on each other. Well, perhaps not literally, but there has been no facilitation for basic hygiene down there in these numbers.
We tend to take a historical bend in a lot of our pieces. This isn’t really meant to be one of those, but it should be noted that this isn’t the first time a migrant population has camped out under an international bridge around here.
For many years, the Kickapoo Indians would camp out under the bridge in Eagle Pass, in Maverick County, while passing back and forth between Texas and Mexico, following their ancestral patterns. What a lot of people don’t know about the Kickapoo, is their language is most similar to the Algonquin tribes from the Great Lakes Region in the Northern U.S., which indicates that’s where the tribe originated long ago. Now, they’re perhaps best known around the state for operating the Lucky Eagle Casino, in Eagle Pass. As a youngster, I remember folks clucking their tongues about the deplorable conditions the Kickapoo had to live in under the bridge, caught in a migrational no man’s land with U.S. Authorities saying they were a Mexico problem, and Mexican authorities pointing back at the U.S. Government.
Getting back to Del Rio and the situation there now, one should always remember the old quote that goes something like: Success has no shortage of parents, failure is an orphan. It should not be a mystery why no one of any major stature is addressing this on FOX News or CNN or any other major outlet.
Some in Val Verde County believe part of why Del Rio is getting crushed right now, can be traced back to the way local Congressman Tony Gonzalez “opened the gates,” by getting the U.S. Military to begin flying aliens out of the area using Laughlin Air Force Base. They also point to the Congressman’s ties to the Non Governmental Organization “Endeavors.” To his credit, the Congressman says he’s coming to the “Queen City,” and demanding answers. He may not actually be able to get any that will satisfy critics, but he is at least willing to show up at a border hotspot, while it threatens to burn down.
Does the average Haitian underneath the Port of Entry know who Tony Gonzales is? Do they even know what a Laughlin Air Force Base is? Probably not. What is entirely possible, and maybe even likely, is what they’ve simply been told by people who do know, is that Del Rio and Val Verde County are good places for people looking to cross.
It’s also entirely possible that the Cartel del Noreste wants to start moving some major freight in the area and wants no interruptions.
So, avoid Del Rio for the next several days. Even if things stay calm under that bridge, the City will surely be hard pressed to avoid exposing citizens to tuberculosis and other conditions that spread easily among a population of people crammed into unsanitary circumstances.
As threatens to become a habit, this has been edited post publication for grammar and substitution of the word 'forth' instead of 'worth.'
